Okay I'll confess. I have to admit I laughed, I'm delighted, and I feel a grim sense of amusement at the government's horrified, ballistic- angry response to the leak of classified materials by Wikileaks. Government bureaucrats are threatening prosecution, screaming this and that. God only knows what they intend to do to get even with the perpetrators of the leaks.
How am I supposed to feel? Joe Average. That's me. And proud of it.
I know they say it's an attack on America, and that it endangers our security and operatives overseas, and I'm willing to listen to that. But it's also time you listen to me, all you government hacks.
The Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution that said "WE THE PEOPLE," which logically excluded women, blacks, Indians, Mexican-Americans and even poor white men. It should have been "WE THE WELL-TO-DO WHITE MEN."
Most of the Founders also kept slaves. We the People?
You lied to me about the Vietnam War with the Pentagon Papers.
Nixon lied to me he wasn't a crook.
Reagan lied in the Iran-Contra scheme by testifying in court, "I can't remember."
Clinton lied about Monica.
Bush and Cheney lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
Obama is breaking his word on withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.
Why should I care that you're angry about the American people finding out what you've been up to and doing in their name? You want a secret government, and you want to call it Democracy, and you want me to support it.
We had a military operation in Iraq called "Iraqi Freedom." Freedom imposed at the point of a gun, installing a government the people there did not select.
“I have never been afraid of the truth. I don't feel safer not knowing it.”
Freedom, for who? In other words, when I want your opinion I'll give it to ya.'
The myth likes to say that your vote on election day is very important. To a degree it is. You can vote for a bond issue for a library, for a local mayor's race, even for governor or senator. But a large proportion of what goes on in this country is not influenced by your vote. At all.
For example, foreign policy is dictated by people you've never heard of, in secret. When they misbehave, you have no way of knowing it, but they get really angry if by some quirk you find out about it. Then they run to the courts and plead their case in the name of patriotism.
The World Bank meets in secret. Lobbyists and cartels and corporate technocrats and big banks and oil companies and all the rest continue to call the shots without the oversight of public scrutiny. The Lincoln Savings and Loan fiasco is another example. How ironic the bank was named after Abraham Lincoln, a man history has lauded for his honesty.
Government is like the tip of a figurative iceberg. Most of it is under the water and out of sight. Secretive people wouldn't meet in secret if they didn't have something to hide.
Since you guys like to be secretive, and get so angry when by some quirk the shoe is on the other foot, I'll let you in on a little secret of my own. I'm secretly delighted by the leaks. If somebody gets hurt because of information going out, I'm sorry. But in fairness, we're all hurt from secret government at one time or another.
I have never been afraid of the truth. I don't feel safer not knowing it.
All you government paper-shuffling secretive hacks out there in your windowless underground bunkers, you at least can appreciate honesty. You know what that is, right?
America is not really a Democracy. Or even a true Republic.
That's no secret.

Top-level comments on this article: (8 total)I'm also thrilled about them, John. These big organizations have way way too much power. Why shouldn't we know what's going on behind closed doors, considering it's our lives that are being played with?I think that fellow Assange is a brave man. I saw him on the CNN interview where he walked out because the reporter wouldn't stop trying to pry into his private life. He's paid a high price for what he's done, though; he looked completely exhausted.
You say it so well, John. Seems like a terrible thing, but I'm secretly delighted by the leaks as well.
Nice job John. I thought of writing an article on this and I still may. There are so many things "exposed" besides just the documents and their truths.
WikiLeaks has been around for nearly 5 years, and not one life has been lost because of their leaks since their inception. How is it protecting military lives from leaks is more important than protecting civilian lives of foreigners? Assange has not been responsible for one death, yet the military is up to it's ears in bodies of innocent civilians. Who should be brought to justice?
John Sammon, good presentation on Julian Assange Shows .....
On democracy, for me the worst democracy is preferable to a regime of military dictator and the king or communism ......America Democracy is still the best in world.
Julian Assange has also exposed the media ....... Julian Assange said that the published documents are classified Wikileaks higher than the rest of the world's press gathered. How is it that a team of five people managed to make public details suppressed at this level that the rest of the world's press gathered? It is a shame......
What is brought to us by the government through the press and the media continued to repeat itself, ordinary people begin think true. It's human nature. Julian Assange proved what most ordinary people are thinking Amrican is not good information ......
Most secret information exposed by Julian Assange is already known in many countries concerned and, as they have their own channel and similar vigilance and cons espioage. He has no material value to them .........
Many people in India and Indian government does not believe that the routine reporting of America are reliable until enetered into agreements for the implementation. That's the conclusion many opion poll in India. That is why in recent addreess U.S. President to India Paarliament, Obama has to say this time belive what I say ,must be implemented.......
The American warfare is the best and cheap, yet India is buying from Russia and the reason for non-US India consider Russia more reliable than American since last thirty year .......
American double standards is known and debated in the world .....
But exposing secret information from the American public where they have public fountains by means of repeated reports in the media, it makes the American government ashamed before his own people and the peoples of the world .....
To me--Julian Assange intent is not a bad leak information, but to support the human rights of the people of America and all parties concerned to Information Law of the American democracy ....
In Reagan's defense, that may have been the onset of his disease, you know the one he forbade scientists to do research for with stem cells otherwise flushed down a toilet, to repay his unconscious constituency, and help maintain their moral superiority. The other stuff is kind of common knowledge, isn't it? Great work.
Yes, tell it like it is, that's a democracy.
John, I have written to these issues for years now. As the situations grow worse I have come to find out the vast majority approve and are the same as these leaders. The condone, accept, approve and support in many varied ways what they do and fail to do. So is anyone free of the same attributes? I think not, no matter where they be on this planet or who they are. It just amazes me many do not understand this. The bovine, the great multitudes have been in this condition since the dawn of man. Serving the haves and those that hold power. Now if, just if, we all could have the opposite attributes we profess by mouth, profess mind you, mercy, compassion, love, justice, then we wouldn't have a need to express ourselves and this planet truly would be one. So remember this, recovery is on the way, for who? "help is on the way;" just when will it arrive? Yes and "I feel your pain," really. Good job,
I like what you said “I have never been afraid of the truth. I don't feel safer not knowing it." - That's the grim reality we are staring at, today! Those in power can break the law because they pass orders and we have no rights to question them. Democracy is a sham and communism is a pit. Thank you!
