This is a primer for women on what they should know about men, because men rule the world. Oh sure, they let a few women in as tokens, but men are in real charge.
Better the devil you know than the one you don’t.
We’ve heard the old sayings, “a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do," and “you can’t live with ‘em, and you can’t live without ‘em" (this was always said by men about women). In reality, men can’t live with women or themselves.
It’s fear.
I wanna be a big man. I want people to fawn on me. I want people to salute me. I want people to fear me.
Men are driven by fear. Fear of not having enough, enough money. The more money you have, the more of a man you are. Aside from your male organ, the size of your wallet is how much a man you are.
To a woman, for a job to be rewarding or fulfilling is more important than the attainment of mere money and things.
To a man, symbolism is everything. Symbols. A big man drives a big car and lives in a big house even if it’s way too big for him. A big man eats like a hog. A big man uses things up and discards them and buys more big things.
But always, we get back to that most male of feelings. Fear.
I wanna be a big man. I crap bigger than you (a line from the movie City Slickers).
Fear. Of not being a bigger man than the next man. As boys we all watched John Wayne movies. John Wayne hits everybody, but nobody beats up John Wayne. The he-bull. I’ve got to be more of a man than your are. A big man acts tough even though he’s not.
Women seldom express this dysfunctional desire. You hardly ever hear a woman say to another, I’m more of a woman than you are. Tammy Wynette did sing one time, “you ain’t woman enough, to take my man."
If a woman is elected to political office and she acts tough, she is accused of being a “bitch." If she acts feminine, she’s accused of being a “wimp," or “lady-like." That’s why a woman can’t become president.
Women such as Margaret Thatcher (English prime minister) have proven women can be excellent leaders. But British men aren’t as hung up by macho fantasies as American men are.
Men are under no such handicaps as “bitch or “wimp," but they’re afraid of being. To be a man in political office and to be stubborn, stupid, thick-headed and unreasonable is to be called “decisive.“
Yet it is men who are driven by fear. Fear of almost everything. Fear of being proven wrong. Fear of not being seen as manly. Fear of having their desired Alpha Number One Wolf status challenged…if they can achieve it.
Fear of insignificancies is the worst fear of all. Ostentation. Women! Ostentation and its trappings are the key to men. Understand.
To understand men and the world is to understand fear and longing.
To be a man is to be constantly in fear of not being a man…enough.
Women see life more as a contributory participation by disparate separate individuals where foibles and weaknesses are more or less tolerated. Men see it as a patriarchal pecking order with themselves on top complete with underlings in their assigned places as underlings.
Everything from Watergate to World War Two to Iraq can be explained by macho fear. You have to gain dominance..
If I can beat you up, I’m more of a man than you are. If you can beat me up, you’re more of a man than I am.
The biggest man has the biggest muscles and the biggest bulge in his pants.
I wanna be a big man. I want the biggest muscles and the biggest bulge.

Top-level comments on this article: (2 total)The real fear is losing the admiration of others, specifically women. Men act like that because that's what they think women want. Men are in the same 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation socially. They either become a stereotypical macho man or they become a wussy. Woman don't seem to like either but you have better chances being macho than being a wussy.
Yep, it's all based on fear mixed in with some pride. Some years ago I decided I would be a man of good character and never budge. If people don't like who I am I could care less. For those who do like me - they have a made a wise choice in my mind. I always look for good character in others. That's why I choose to read your articles John!
